Why Early Foreign language? : Environmental Analysis
Psychologist Simge Tekin, TAD Preschool, Mavişehir, October 2016
A second language acquired at an early age has environmental as well as biological effects. First of all, the fact that the child can use a language other than his mother tongue enables him to communicate with people more easily. He doesn't have to struggle to learn a new language like many people in the coming years, and this is a huge time saver for the child. On the other hand, thanks to the second language that the child learns at an early age, he has the opportunity to get to know different cultures. This opens the child's mind to understanding other cultures and helps in understanding and evaluating people in the other country. In some early foreign language learning studies applied in Europe, it has been determined that a second language acquired by the child provides a wide linguistic spectrum for future education and training and diversifies future career possibilities. In addition, it is known that the acquisition of a second language has effects such as the ability to express himself more easily, and therefore an increase in self-confidence.
When the implementation of second language teaching at an early age was discussed, it was determined that the most successful method was teaching in games with songs, poems and nursery rhymes. Scientists working on foreign language teaching have examined the texts used during language teaching. They identified some keywords in these texts and realized that these words were mostly used in children's poems, songs and lullabies. Bichentayev in a study published in 2002 “Childhood; Is it not a game, a fairy tale, a song, a story, a poem, or entertainment?” He mentioned that the most effective teaching in the preschool period is carried out with games and fun activities (Bikcentayev, 2002). Therefore, in the preschool period, unlike adulthood, second language teaching should be carried out with much more fun and different methods.
